Mosquito bites can be irritating and itchy, many times they can actually be remedied without necessarily getting medical attention. The first thing one gets to notice after a mosquito has bitten them is a slight swelling and redness on the skin that is made worse by itching. It is important to remember that as much as it feels uncomfortable scratching should be avoided as it only makes the irritated area worse and may lead to more complication, bacteria in the finger nails can lead to further infection.

There are inexpensive ways and simple remedies at home that can be used to ease and treat discomfort from mosquito bites. The first step to any mosquito bite is to try and wash the bite area with soap and water, after the skin dries ice can be applied to help ease the redness and the swelling. Ointments are also good when it comes to reducing inflammation and irritated skin. Use of hydrocortisone cream, ibuprofen gels and Calamine lotion can help relieve severe itching. There are also pastes that can be made in the kitchen such as using one part of water to two parts of baking soda, this mixture is directly applied to the itchy bite and acts as one of the best mosquito bite remedies. Antiseptics such as an iodine solution can also be used.

Some people suffer serious allergic reactions to mosquito bites and may react by having an itch that lasts for days, significant swelling and redness. It is important to stick to the recommended dose. There are herbal plants that also have natural anti-itch and anti-inflammatory, this makes them ideal for use at home as mosquito bite remedies. Some of them include Aloe-vera, hazel, lemon juice, crushed basil and calendula; they can be applied directly to the bite area to reduce itching and swelling. For people with sensitive skin extract from grapefruit seed can be mixed with a little vegetable oil and water, these remedies are convenient and easy to access. The pulpy inside of a banana peel also provides for a great remedy and can be rubbed on the bite.

In severe cases it may be necessary to get medical attention and have medicines prescribed. The more common ones would either be corticosteroids or antihistamines and in some cases antibiotics may be necessary. Mosquitoes do transmit some deadly diseases such as malaria and one should try get medical advice whenever they start experiencing certain symptoms. Much as there are many home based mosquito bite remedies one can use to relieve the itch and bite caused by mosquitoes, it is better to focus more on prevention and keep mosquitoes from our homes.

Whenever one is outdoors especially at dawn or dusk it’s important to wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt. If possible mosquito repellents should also be used especially if one suspects they will be outdoors at night for long hours. Swampy areas and long grass should also be avoided since these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
